Why the Overview Paragraph Matters
The overview paragraph is the most important part of your IELTS Writing Task 1 response. Many students skip it or write something weak β and that costs them a full band score.
Without a clear overview, you cannot score above Band 6. With a strong overview, you immediately move toward Band 7+.
What Is an Overview?
An overview is a 2-3 sentence summary of the main trends or features in the chart, graph, or diagram. It goes right after your introduction.
Structure of Task 1:
How to Write a Strong Overview
Formula: Start with "Overall," then describe:
Example (Line Graph β Population Growth):
Weak overview: "The graph shows population growth from 1950 to 2000."
(This just repeats the question β no marks!)
Strong overview: "Overall, the population of City A increased significantly over the 50-year period, with the most rapid growth occurring between 1970 and 1990."
(This tells the examiner the main trend β full marks!)
Example (Bar Chart β Sales Data):
Weak: "The chart shows sales of different products."
Strong: "Overall, Product A had the highest sales throughout the period, while Product C consistently had the lowest. All products showed an upward trend from 2015 to 2020."
What NOT to Include in Your Overview
- Specific numbers β Save those for body paragraphs
- Every single data point β Overview is a summary, not a list
- Your opinion β Task 1 is descriptive, not analytical
- Minor details β Focus on the big picture
